Jaitley spars with Chidambaram over 'hatchet job' remark on GDP revision
New Delhi, 29 November Finance minister Arun Jaitley took on predecessor P Chidambaram on the revision of earlier Gross Domeestic Product (GDP) data for saying this was the result of a hatchet job.The back-series data in question, said Jaitley, had been calculated by a highly credible organisation, the Central Statistics Office, which maintains an arm's length distance from his ministry."Those who took after the new series in 2015 now consider the new series to be a "hatched job" and a "bad joke". What humours some when data shows an upward trend depresses them if it moves in the reverse direction," Jaitley said on his Facebook page.Chidambaram had said on Wednesday of the Niti Aayog's revised GDP numbers: "They are a bad joke. Actually, they are worse than a bad joke. The numbers are the result of a hatchet job." Jaitley reminded Chidambaram that the latter had, on February 3, 2015, welcomed the new GDP series. He quoted Chidambaram as saying: "The new data successfully establishes ..

RBI should be held accountable for IL&FS crisis: Arvind Subramanian
Terming the IL&FS crisis as a regulatory failure, former chief economic advisor to finance minister Arvind Subramanian has said the Reserve Bank should be held responsible for the crisis at one of the largest entities it has been regulating. In a soon to be published book, 'Of Counsel: The Challenges of the Modi-Jaitley Economy,' Subramanian says though RBI has a good reputation, it does not mean it's always right, as for years, the RBI was unable to grasp the seriousness of the loan repayment problems or identify the prolonged frauds of Nirav Modi and the likes. "Now, with the recent shenanigans involving IL&FS being revealed, this failure seems to have encompassed not just commercial banks but also non-bank financial companies. For these failures, the RBI needs to be held accountable," he says in the book, published by Penguin Random House India. The book will be first launched in Mumbai on December 7 and then in Delhi on the 9th. Subramanian calls upon RBI to .

Growth and trade worries to keep a lid on European stocks in 2019: Reuters poll

European and euro zone indices have fallen 8-10 percent so far this year, lagging Wall Street, as analysts have been slashing their earnings growth forecasts amid a weakening economic outlook and tensions over Italy's budget. The pan-European STOXX 600 benchmark index is expected to reach 365 points by year-end, according to the poll of 27 brokers, fund managers and analysts, 1.9 percent above Monday's close of 358 points but 6.2 percent down on the year

UK government, Bank of England to spell out no-deal Brexit risks for economy
By William Schomberg LONDON (Reuters) - The British government and the Bank of England are likely to step up their warnings on Wednesday of a hit to the economy from a no-deal Brexit, potentially helping Prime Minister Theresa May to tackle deep opposition to her plan. Barely four months before Britain is due to leave the European Union, May has failed to get much of her own Conservative Party behind the agreement sealed with EU leaders on Sunday, leaving open the possibility of a no-deal Brexit. BoE Governor Mark Carney and finance minister Philip Hammond have both previously stressed the importance of a transition period, as included in May's plan, to ease Britain out of its four-decade membership of the EU
